Hallo QR-Code Leser ;-)

Verbaute Komponenten:

  • Surly Big Dummy Rahmen, http://www.surly.com
  • XtraCycle Gepäckträgersystem http://www.xtracycle.com, www.used-hq.de
  • Shimano Alfine Antrieb und Naben (taugt nich so sehr, das nächste mal ne Rohloff/ SON)
  • Alutech Wildsau Felgen
  • Brooks Sattel
  • Magura Gustav M 2-Kolben-Schwimmsattel-Scheibenbremsen ( “Wurfanker”)

BD: Final Stage

Ok,

Bike should be ready for the next trip around the world ;-)

Tubus Lowrider is mounted now, altough one small part is still missing.

Schwalbe Spke tires are mounted, too. These Tires make a lot of noise on paved ground, but have excellent traction on ice and mud. The Long Wheelbase and the heavy weight over the front wheel adds some stability, too. Riding on Ice and Snow really makes fun now ;-)

Something about security

Since it’s getting dark here already in the afternoon these days,
I decided to add some special reflecting film to some frame parts.

At daylight they are relatively neutral, but at nigth these film adds some security.
Here some shots ( forgive me, was only my mobile phone camera).

1st shot without flash, second one with ( yes, my mobile phone has xenon flash ;-) .

click on the picture to see the animaton…

Why no Film on the Fork ( obviously a better place ) ?

These Photos are already outdated, the BD now has a TUBUS Lowrider at the Front with a Pair of Ortlieb bags mounted (i had to remove the lowrider temporarily due to some mechanical problems)
- So the Film would have nearly no effect while the Bags are mounted.

Furthermore the Bike has Spike Tires mounted now ( the ones you can see above the Snapdeck on the Photo ). Schwalbe Ice Spikers.

Disco Mode on

Grad ein neues Rücklicht fürs MTB gekauft.

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Na gut, ich geb’s ja zu: Ich wollte nur mal das neu installierte “WordTube” Plugin hier im Wordpress testen.

BD: Test ride

Ok, now its time for a first test ride. Todays lesson:

Ride from Erlangen,Germany to Thuisbrunn (thats in the Franconian Switzerland), buy two crates of beer from a small brewery ( that only sells the beer at the brewery ) and ride back home. Don’t take the direct way home, ride to Nuremberg, Germany first.

Lesson completed ;-)

Weight of the load was about 30 kilos, and handling capabilities were still fine. The franconian swiss is a low mountain range so altitude difference of the tour was about 1000 meters. What came into my mind was if the Alfine with a 20 teeth sprocket would have been better than the 18 teeth sprocket that is mounted right now. Climbing up the mountains is ok but could be better. Additionally the high gears are much to fast at the moment. Doing 100rpm at the cranks result in a speed over 40km/h, that is more than needed. Possibly I will invest the 5€ in a 20 teeth sprocket.

BTW.: Cheers ;-)

BD: Completed.

Hi,

Brakes arrived this week! So now everything is complete now. Setup of the Gustav M Brakes is very tricky, until now I haven’t managed it to get them working without grinding. It seems that the IS2000-mount is not 100% in place. These mounts were milled by the bike-shop, so something might have gone wrong there. I will see…

At least the grinding noise is quit enough to ride the bike. Indeed, braking force of the Gustav M brakes is enourmous. Did I say enormous? I meant brutal! While testing I did some unintended stoppies, with only two fingers at the brake lever.

Here some pictures of the final setup:

Please note mother’s selfmade noodle sauce on the snapdeck ;-)

Looking into my cellar another idea came to my mind. I’ve still got a bicycle rack from my sold car.

Mounted this on one of the wideloaders ( done in 60 seconds…)… result:

Weigth including the 2008 Specialized Langster New York approx. 30 kilos…

BD: Just some finetuning

Did some finetuning today ( fixing fender mounts, mounting the cables for the lights…)

Didn’t heard anything about the missing brakes. I think i will buy a normal centerlock-to-is2000 adapter today ( i’ve got two of them especially for magura) and fit an Oro K18 to the front wheel ( one brake is enough for now ). I want to make some test rides….

BD: Next load of Bikeparts

Hi,

some Parts arrived today:

  • Schwalbe Fat Frank
  • Schwalbe tubes
  • Spank Handlebar Grips
  • Chains (HG-93)
  • Magura Centerlock adapters

everthing installed within an hour. Now it already looks like a bike….

I moved the Airzound to the Seatpost. Quite uncommon position for a horn, but it definitely took too much space at the handlebar. Furthermore, it is now possible to hide the pressure tank behind the xtracycle bags.

Delivery date of the Brakes was again delayed for a week ;-(

But so I can take the time for some finetuning… weather forecast says that there is plenty of time to do things at home ;-)

BD: Only minor progress so far…

Damn. Still waiting for deliveries from Internetshopistan.

At least I made a preliminiary installation of the fenders that arrived at the beginning of the week. Cause the tires are still missing, nothing that can be finalized.

2359

As you can see,I installed a B&M Lumotec IQ Fly Headlight. Until the SON Edelux or the IQ Cyo gets (back) available this one has to do the job.

Ah yes…and today the “AirZound III” arrived. A bike horn you can blast motorists away with. Not to be used with pedestrians, the chance that the victim gets a heart attack is too high ;-) So aside the Horn a Bell will be installed, too.

BD: Wheelbuilding

Got an SMS that morning.

The “Packstation” told me that there’s a Package waiting for me ;-)  ( DHL Packstation is some kind of an automated Package terminal where you can drop and get Packages.)

Content of the Package: Alfine Hubs and some spare parts for the Magura brake – unfortunately not the brakes itself. They will hopefully arrive next week.

23322335

Ok, but having the hubs means it’s time for wheelbuilding.

Rims are 26 inch, 36mm width with 36 holes – tough enough, I think. Spokes are DT Swiss super comp – cold forged, triple butted. Nipples are red anodized alumnium nipples, DT Swiss, too. I’m not sure if they are compareable by terms of stability to brass nipples., if they fail, I’ve got black brass nipples for replacement. Due to the fact that this bike gets strong disc brakes, I decided to spoke the rims in reverse direction compared to the usual pattern, meaning the trailing spokes get stressed not while accelerating but braking. I’m quite sure the forces are higher here.

Unfortunately this has a little disadvantage: the Rim is designed for the normal scheme, so I can’t use the bigger clearance left of the leader spoke for the valve. Not a big deal, but should be mentioned.

2317

Ok, here some pictures made while building the wheels. Nothing special……

2308231123142329

Spokes were a bit long, better should have used another spoke calculator. 2mm less would have been perfect. But everything should be inside the limits.

So here’s the result:

23382344

I prefer to do the spoke stress releaving by simply cycling some miles, so final adjustments can be done later on.

Of course, I did a try-on ;-)

Alfine Crankset is mounted, too. Not the prettiest one, but cheap ;-) . Pedals are Shimano PD-A530’s. Like the PD-M324 they are dual-use types ( SPD and normal Shoes) , but lighter and better ground clearance. Unfortunately only available in silver ;-( .

What’s still missing are the tires, the chains and some fenders. Hopefully they will arrive next week…
